What is Multicultural Counseling?

When people think about culture, many words come to mind. Culture encompasses the norms, traditions, and beliefs of a group of individuals. So how does this connect to counseling? Every client I’ve encountered has been different from me, with unique values and perspectives. Multicultural counseling goes beyond the average session by requiring the counselor to take time and gain knowledge about an individual’s belief system, life experiences, and social identity, incorporating these into their counseling goals.

Key questions to consider include: How do others view me? How do I view myself? What beliefs are important to me? Multicultural counseling is more than just race and gender—it examines life systemically and offers another way to understand where you come from and how you operate. Whether you belong to an individualistic or collectivistic culture, or believe the sky is red or blue, we all have different backgrounds. What unites us is the ability to truly understand one another beyond the surface.

This isn’t just important for counselors—it’s something Diamond Heart firmly believes in. Everyone deserves to be recognized not only for what they bring, but also for what might not be immediately visible. Nearly every person on this planet has been judged or seen as different because of something outside the “social norm.” The heart of multicultural counseling is about breaking down these stigmas and embracing your true self.
